I bought this item in October of 2015 from a marketplace seller. The sale itself was wonderful, tablet arrived quickly, and I have no issue with that. Fast forward six months, and I’ve noticed that has never been a firmware update. It’s on 4.4.2 of KitKat. Lollipop is available and so is Marshmallow (you have to love Android’s firmware names, seriously). After much research, Samsung is NOT upgrading the Tab 4, model SM-T230NU. Apparently it is focusing on 8.0 tablets and higher. Does that mean the tablet doesn’t work? Of course not. But you’ll never get firmware upgrades and that is already causing me issues re: storage on the SD card, game updates, etc. Buyer should absolutely be aware of this before purchasing. I wish I had been because I would have gone another route.

I am a huge, and I mean huge Samsung fan but I have to say these are an epic fail. I understand it’s an 8 gb but it comes with almost 4gb worth of stuff already usin it up! And the fact that apps need to be downloaded to the internal memory and not the extra SD card, it is absolutely useless. My kids have maybe a total of 8 games which two can never update cause there’s not enough space. I mean come on, either make it so the SD card can be mainly used or don’t gunk up the device with all that crap.

Nothing against the seller at all in regards to this, device only. The Tab 4 7.0 Wifi (SMT230NU) model is obsolete when you buy it and will stay that way. Samsung usually pushes out updates to new OS as they can, but this comes with Android KitKat and will have it forever. Over two years ago they released the 5.1 (Lollipop) update for the LTE version of the tablet. Us with the WIFI model are screwed. So basically if you ever want to update to newer Android firmware versions, DO NOT get this tablet, you will be left with KitKat for its life. This isnt to say KitKat is bad, but some apps require the newer versions and its sad that it was almost a waste as newer versions release and this becomes less and less supported.
